Most retellings of Anna Delvey's story focus on the fraud and the fashion, the fake heiress who talked her way into New York's elite circles, conned banks and hotels out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, and became the inspiration for Netflix's Inventing Anna. What gets far less attention is a more uncomfortable question: why did intelligent, accomplished women stay loyal to her for so long, well past the point where the warning signs were obvious?
The core of the episode
Anna Sorokin, who became known as Anna Delvey, was eventually convicted of theft of services and grand larceny after years of posing as a wealthy German socialite. The financial details of the case are well documented. What this episode focuses on instead is the psychology underneath it, specifically how she chose the people who stayed closest to her.
Anna didn't select her victims at random. According to this episode's analysis, she identified each woman's particular psychological wound, the specific thing she was hungry for, whether that was status, validation, belonging, or proximity to a particular kind of glamour, and reflected it back with precision. What these women saw in Anna wasn't really Anna at all. It was a version of themselves, the version they'd been longing to become.
This pattern has a name in clinical work on manipulation and personality disorders: mirroring. A person who is skilled at reading others can identify exactly what someone is missing and offer a convincing reflection of it, without ever having to deliver on the substance behind it. It's a precise, targeted form of influence, and it explains why intelligent, successful people can stay loyal to someone whose story doesn't add up, long after a stranger would have walked away.
The relevance here goes well beyond Anna Delvey. The same dynamic shows up in toxic workplaces, where a particular colleague or leader manages to retain fierce loyalty from capable people even as red flags accumulate around them. Recognising this pattern matters because it shows how precisely manipulation can be targeted, and how little protection intelligence offers once someone has correctly identified what you're hungry for.
