My services are designed to uphold the dignity, rights, and wishes of individuals, ensuring they receive the support they need to navigate complex legal and healthcare systems. I have supported clients in tribunals, Court of Protection hearings and complex legal proceedings, with several cases progressing to the High Court and receiving national media attention.
Policy and Parliamentary Contribution: Contributed evidence to Parliamentary discussions regarding the role and limitations of Independent Mental Capacity Advocates (IMCAs) in cases involving 'unbefriended' individuals after death. Evidence highlighted systemic challenges where coroners and GPs contacted advocacy services for information or support relating to death certification and inquests when individuals had no next of kin. The submission supported calls for clearer national guidance and appropriate resourcing, ensuring that advocacy roles remain aligned with statutory duties while safeguarding the rights and dignity of vulnerable individuals.
Independent Advocacy Support: Provided national statutory independent advocacy services to ensure the rights of individuals in challenging situations were upheld. This included representing clients’ views in complex matters related to serious medical treatments, care reviews, living arrangements, safeguarding, and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS).
Legal Reform and Advocacy: Played a critical role in highlighting to Parliament the illegal implementation of blanket Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR) orders during the pandemic. This advocacy led to a Parliamentary publication, aligning the NHS Constitution and local government safeguarding protocols with the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to prevent such misuse in the future.
Court and Tribunal Representation: Supported clients in tribunals and Court of Protection hearings, with some cases progressing to the High Court. These efforts ensured clients’ voices were heard, safeguarding their rights and improving their quality of life.
Training and Education: Delivered training across the UK to healthcare professionals, stakeholders, and beneficiaries. This included leading a postgraduate programme at a London hospital, educating junior doctors and GPs on advocacy, the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and the Human Rights Act 1998.
Community Engagement and Reporting: Built strong relationships within communities and advocacy teams to enhance communication and self-confidence among clients and staff. Contributed to newsletters and case studies, focusing on human rights, advocacy in care homes, and training for healthcare professionals.
Compliance and Best Practices: Consistently maintained accurate records, conducted feedback reports, and stayed updated with the latest legislation, policies, and case law to ensure the highest standards in advocacy support.
